EFFETTO FARFALLA

Cascina Cuccagna
Cascina Cuccagna (farmhouse of good times) is based in the heart of Porta Romana district in Milan. It dates from 1695, when its occupation was to grow medicinal herbs. Nowadays the Cascina hosts a bar and restaurant, courtyard, garden and a vegetable plot. The farmhouse acts as a hub for citizens by hosting cultural and community events and focuses on fairness, social and environmental responsibility, innovation, aesthetics, active participation and respect for the common good. www.cuccagna.org

PROJECTS

Our House
Martijn Koomen, Michiel Martens, Roel de Boer, Akko Goldenbeld, Kirstie van Noort, Rogier Arents, Wouter Strietman, Jetske Visser, Giulia Berra and Steven Banken
10 individual Dutch designers come together in one house, with a common urge to innovate and push at the boundaries of convention. Theirs is an intuitive search for sustainability, honesty, tactility, craftsmanship and warmth. This summerhouse, in which inside and outside are combined by natural permeable materials, shows their vision on design from inside and out. It shelters objects and experiences: a breezing fire, the smell of fresh ground coffee, handmade porcelain made from waste material, textiles with refined patterns, a table inspired by the growth-rings of a tree, lamps made from old gas cylinders, outside a reed bench to rest on. Together they form the basic needs to accommodate a living.
For the projects that comprise Our House see below.

Our House (part of Our House)
Martijn Koomen
For Our House, Koomen combined the concept of garden house and a greenhouse to live in. Plants grow from the outside in, creating a natural symbiosis between vegetation and man. Nature waters the plants, but the glass window prevents water from entering the house. Scents, colours, wind and even small insects enhance the home environment. In the house Koomen shows new tables, and a series of plates made in collaboration with an ant. Our House is also host for the work and project of nine other Dutch Designers.

Spruce Stove (part of Our House)
Roel de Boer and Michiel Martens
The Spruce Stove arose from collaboration between Roel de Boer and Michiel Martens. The Spruce Stove is a new approach of burning wood. A complete tree trunk can be fed in this compact stove. The aperture is a diaphragm and encloses seamless around the tree. By gently pushing the trunk inwards during the burning the experience lasts as long as the trunk. www.roeldeboer.com
www.michielmartens.com

Spotlight 7.A. (part of Our House)
Rogier Arents
Rogier Arents is a product designer and visual communicator of scientific research. He presents Spotlight 7.1., a porcelain lamp inspired by the drawings of Jean Baptiste Louis Romé de l'Isle, considered one of the creators of modern crystallography. The lamp functions as a spotlight, it can be pointed in angles with a simple system. The transparency of the porcelain elevates the beauty of the structure.

EspressoStrietman (part of Our House)
Wouter Strietman
The ES2 is a wall mount manual lever espresso machine, designed and developed by Mr Espresso Wouter Strietman. The craft of making espresso, reduced to its essence. This machine will let you explore the boundaries of espresso making. Infusion, temperature and pressure; these are the variables that are free to play with, they influence taste development; acidity, sweetness and bitterness.

Tide (part of Our House)
studio Jetske Visser
Jetske Visser turns rarely discussed subjects into something tangible, out of a consciousness that focuses on mankind, nature and technique. Tide arose out of the fascination of weaving technique, nature and the sea tides. Yarns are painted with natural pigments, afterwards immersed so only parts of the yarns get tinted. While weaving these yarns a perfect gradient in colour arises.
www.jetskevisser.nl

Bellamp (part of Our House)
Akko Goldenbeld
Goldenbeld is known for his work with used materials, especially metal. Objects become personal to him. While transporting a discarded air tank from the scrap heap to his studio, once in a while a sound emerged from the tanks, almost musical. This translated into Bellamp, a lamp that emits a long sound when switched on. It’s as an ode to light, and simultaneously makes people aware of using energy in a world where everything flashes by.
www.akkogoldenbeld.com

Sheaves (part of Our House)
Steven Banken
The cutting of reed and willow shoots was once an annually recurring scene in the Biesbosch (a national park). Steven Banken’s project Sheaves resurrects this old craft. During the summer, the sheaves return as objects to sit on. The sheaf follows the rhythm of the seasons: the reeds slowly decay in the autumn and are reabsorbed into nature. The resulting refuse finds its way into nests, floating islands for small mammals and fertiliser for new willows and reed.

New Dutch Roofing Tile (part of Our House)
Roel de Boer
Rooftops offer a protected space where a biotope can settle freely. Using New Dutch Roofing Tile, the slanted roofs (which are part of the Dutch city landscape) can be adjusted to allow for vegetation, becoming stepping-stones for flora and fauna within the city. Due to its lightweight materials, New Dutch Roofing Tile moreover does not require adjustments to roof structure. Roel de Boer is an artisanal, enterprising and creative designer, with a fascination for mechanisms in nature and technology as well as within human beings.

6:1 (part of Our House)
Studio Kirstie van Noort
Once grabbed by a material or process Van Noort wants to unravel this to the essence. The information that is revealed during this research forms the foundation of the stories behind the final product. In 6:1 she reflects on the production process of immaculate white porcelain. This is extremely damaging: one kilo of product is accompanied by six kilos of waste, and the mining changes landscapes once and for all. Colour, texture and structure of the waste are the source of this ceramic series. The abundance and diversity of the residue create an extra dimension of beauty, always in a 6:1 proportion.
www.kirstievannoort.nl

Cittá (part of Our House)
Giulia Berra
Her artistic research deals with the empathic connections between human and natural processes, trying to describe identity through relationships. Berra focuses on the subtle links with insects, particularly on the idea of exuvia (spoil abandoned by the insect after the moult) as a metaphor of personality changes, metamorphosis and border status, suspended between life and death.

Our House: 10 x Eindhoven in Milaan

Akko Goldenbeld

MILANO 2013 – GOODESIGN AT CASCINA CUCCAGNA

Responsible design, which we call GOODESIGN, is an essential tool for improving skills and resources, and for creating harmony – through beauty -between individual well-being and the common good. “WORK WELL, LIVE BETTER” means that there is a close and important relationship between working well and living well: the first of the two
deals with and tries to improve people, places and culture; the second is directly linked to justice, social cohesion and respect for the environment. All these factors are interlinked and produce efficient, effective and practical results. Spreading good models, providing examples, promoting meetings and relationships is necessary: this is why Goodesign was created for 2012, a collective grouping of creative professionals and businesses, and this is why we are repeating the experience in 2013 and enriching it with new stimuli.

THE LOCATION
CASCINA CUCCAGNA a former farm and farmhouse for a new public area
After years of abandon, and thanks to an important restoration initiative, the Cascina
Cuccagna (in Milan since 1695) is once more open to the city to welcome and support
creativity, the desire to participate and express civic duty on the part of individuals, groups
and associations. Shared vegetable gardens, restaurants and bars, agricultural workshops,
facilities for children and families, a bicycle workshop, hostel, farm shops, and open spaces
for events and projects go to make the Cascina Cuccagna a centre for initiatives and
community participation able to bring the country back into the heart of the city and offer a new way of living urban spaces.

“L’essenza e l’eccesso” supervised by Paolo Ulian
Within the garden area, an exhibition with the title “ L’essenza e l’eccesso” unfolds, under the eye of the designer Paolo Ulian and accompanied with the publication of the same name
published by Corraini. A pathway constructed in stages where answers that are either
“essential” or “excessive” are given to the same function, and which are intended to provoke reflection and generate awareness. The installation, a series of little tables/ balance made out of pinewood, has been created according to the designs of the Tuscan architect by the craftsmen of the Voce del legno brand which belongs to the family-run Effegieffe business.
